My Personal Journey
In 2020, I faced the challenge of transitioning a public speaking class from in-person to a virtual format.
Teaching a subject that relies heavily on interaction and immediate feedback seemed impossible online. But through trial and error, constant iteration, and phenomenal student feedback, we discovered that the key was creating a safe, supportive space for practice and growth.
A Story of Transformation
One student, Mayra, was particularly memorable. At the start of the 3-hour long virtual workshop, she was timid and quiet. When it came time for her to talk during her first ice breaker, she froze and stood silent for over a minute, struggling to say a single word.
Eventually, she retreated and asked not to speak.
But by the end of the workshop, after participating in the exercises and receiving continuous encouragement and feedback, Mayra’s transformation was nothing short of remarkable.
She confidently stood before the entire class and delivered a full 5-minute speech.

She went from being shy, timid, and silent to authentic, courageous, and confident.
During her speech, Mayra’s demeanor had completely changed. She started her speech with a moment of vulnerability, stumbling on her words for a second.
Instead of freezing up, she smiled and said, “Sorry, I’m a little nervous.”
The authenticity in her voice, her face, and her words connected her to the audience and helped her gather her composure to tell a moving story of overcoming struggle and striving for a better life.
A moment from her speech that really stood out was when she said, “You don’t need to come from something to become something.” Her words resonated deeply with everyone in the room.
Later, she continued, “If you have the opportunity staring at you right in the face, why not take it? Why not try to do something that’s going to benefit you in the end, that’s going to make you feel proud of yourself.”

This journey led to the creation of Communicating with Power, a nine-week online workshop that helped hundreds of students in Phoenix, Atlanta, Chicago, and San Francisco gain confidence in public speaking.
